How Challenges Work

1. These Rules and How They Apply

These Official Challenge Rules (the “Rules”) govern every step-count competition (each, a “Challenge”) offered through the Moneystep mobile application (the “App”), which is operated by Moneystep LLC (the “Platform”). By enrolling in a Challenge, you agree to these Rules, to the Moneystep Terms of Service, and to the Moneystep Privacy Policy. If these Rules conflict with the Terms of Service with respect to the conduct of a Challenge, these Rules control for that Challenge; the Terms of Service otherwise remain in full effect.

Each Challenge also has Challenge-specific details posted in the App at the time of enrollment — including its start and end times, enrollment window, entry fee, prize schedule, minimum number of entrants, and any rank requirement. Those posted details form part of these Rules for that Challenge. The version of these Rules in effect at the time you enroll in a Challenge governs that Challenge for you.

Each time you enroll in a Challenge, you will be asked to confirm that you have read and agree to these Rules before your enrollment is completed. Your confirmation is recorded with the date and time.

2. Skill-Based Competition

Every Challenge is a skill-based endurance competition. Outcomes are determined entirely by the number of steps each entrant physically takes during the Challenge, as recorded by that entrant’s approved step source — a result of physical effort, fitness, and sustained activity that is wholly within each entrant’s own control. No element of chance, drawing, or random selection determines any outcome, placement, or tiebreak, and no prize is awarded on the basis of anything other than counted steps. Challenges are not gambling and are not games of chance.

3. Eligibility

To enroll in a Challenge, you must satisfy all of the following at the time of enrollment:

  • You have a Moneystep account in good standing. You may maintain only one account, and only you may use it.
  • You are at least 18 years of age. You must complete age and identity verification, using a government-issued photo ID and a matching selfie, before your first withdrawal.
  • You are a resident of the United States and are physically located in an Eligible State (Section 4) at the time of account creation, at the time of enrollment, and while taking any steps counted toward a Challenge.
  • You are not an Excluded Person (Section 5).
  • You are not currently self-excluded. You may exclude yourself from paid and cash-prize Challenges at any time from the App’s settings, for 30 days, 90 days, one year, or permanently; a self-exclusion cannot be shortened or reversed before the period you selected has ended.
  • Step history: your account has recorded step data from an approved step source over the preceding four weeks, sufficient to show that your source is active and reliably recording. Manually entered step data does not count toward this requirement. The Platform may adjust the parameters of this requirement at its discretion.
  • Background sync permission: you have granted the App background access to your step data as described in Section 11, and you keep it enabled throughout the Challenge and its post-Challenge sync window.
  • Rank: where a Challenge carries a rank requirement, your assigned rank tier — based on your recent step activity and recalculated regularly — meets that requirement. A change in your rank during a Challenge does not affect that Challenge. Your rank tier may be held at its current level while activity on your account is under review (Section 18).
  • You are not enrolled in any other active Challenge. You may participate in only one active Challenge at a time.

Location verification: The Platform verifies your location at account creation, at each entry into a paid or cash-prize Challenge, and at each withdrawal request, using a third-party provider designed to detect VPN use and location spoofing. If a check places you outside an Eligible State, or detects VPN use or location spoofing, the account creation, entry, or withdrawal is blocked, and a record of the check is kept. It remains your sole responsibility to ensure that your participation is lawful in your jurisdiction at all times. The Platform may verify eligibility at any time and may disqualify entries and withhold prizes where participation violates these Rules or applicable law.

4. Eligible States

Challenges are open only to entrants physically located in the following states (each an “Eligible State”): Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, and Texas.

Participation from any other U.S. state, territory, or from outside the United States is not permitted. The list of Eligible States may change over time; the list in effect at the time of your enrollment, as reflected in the App, governs that Challenge.

5. Excluded Persons

The following persons (“Excluded Persons”) may not enter any public Challenge that has an entry fee or awards a cash prize:

  • (a) owners, members, managers, officers, employees, and interns of the Platform, and any other person with an ownership or profit interest in the Platform;
  • (b) any contractor, agent, or other service provider of the Platform, or any of its personnel, who administers Challenges, can affect scoring, prize-setting, or results, or reviews entrants’ non-public scores or step data during a Challenge;
  • (c) any person the Platform compensates to promote the App, while that engagement is in effect, other than a user who earns a Free Entry under the referral program; and
  • (d) members of the household of any person described in (a) through (c).

A “non-public Challenge” is a Challenge that only users invited by the Platform can join; every other Challenge is a “public Challenge.” Excluded Persons may enter Challenges that award no cash prize, and may enter a non-public Challenge that has an entry fee or awards a cash prize only if every entrant in it is an Excluded Person; no other user may join such a Challenge. No administrator account of the Platform appears on the leaderboard of any public Challenge. If an Excluded Person is found to have entered a public Challenge that has an entry fee or awards a cash prize, the Platform may remove the entry at any time and withhold any associated prize, and any prize position that entry would have occupied passes to the next eligible entrant in the standings.

6. Entry and Entry Fees

To enter a Challenge, enroll in the App during that Challenge’s enrollment window and pay its entry fee, if any. The entry fee for each Challenge is a single flat amount disclosed in the App before you enroll; every entrant in a Challenge pays the same fee. Entry fees do not exceed $40 per Challenge.

Payment. Entry fees paid by card or another external payment method are collected through a licensed third-party payment processor. When you enroll, the processor places an authorization on your payment method; funds are captured when the Challenge starts. If the Challenge does not proceed, any authorization is released and any entry fee already captured is refunded in full. If the processor cannot capture your entry fee when the Challenge starts — for example, because your payment method is declined or the authorization has expired — you are not entered in the Challenge, your enrollment is cancelled, and you are not charged. An entrant whose fee cannot be captured is not counted toward the Challenge’s minimum number of entrants.

Card processing fee: If you pay an entry fee by card or another external payment method, a card processing fee is added that passes through what our payment processor charges for the transaction, with no markup. The entry fee, the card processing fee, and the total are each shown to you before you confirm payment, and the total is the amount authorized on your payment method and captured when the Challenge starts. The card processing fee is separate from the entry fee, funds no prize, and is not calculated by reference to any prize. No card processing fee applies to an entry fee paid from your wallet balance or to a Free Entry. The card processing fee is not part of the entry fee and does not count toward the $40 entry-fee limit. Wherever these Rules provide that an authorization is released or an entry fee is refunded, the card processing fee is released or refunded with it; wherever an entry fee is non-refundable, the card processing fee is non-refundable too.

Paying from your wallet. If you hold a wallet balance from prior winnings, you may apply it to an entry fee instead of paying externally. A wallet-paid entry fee is deducted from your wallet when you enroll, is not collected through the payment processor, and is restored to your wallet if the Challenge does not proceed. It is otherwise subject to the same rules — including the refund rules in Section 15 — as any other entry fee.

Free Entries. If you have been granted a Free Entry through the referral program described in the Terms of Service, you may apply it to a single paid Challenge of your choosing. The Challenge remains a paid Challenge and you compete on the same terms as paying entrants, including prize eligibility; only your entry fee is covered. A Free Entry applied to a Challenge is restored if you exit before the Challenge starts, and is not restored if you exit after it starts.

Free Challenges. Some Challenges have no entry fee and may still award cash prizes. Free Challenges are governed by these Rules in the same way as paid Challenges, except that the entry-fee and refund provisions do not apply. No prize in a Free Challenge is allocated by chance.

No entry may be submitted on behalf of another person, and payment must be made using a payment method you own or are authorized to use.

7. Challenge Format and Prize Schedules

Each Challenge’s prize schedule — the number of winning placements and the exact dollar amount for each placement — is fixed and is posted in the App before enrollment opens. Prize amounts do not depend on, and do not scale with, the number of entrants or the amount of entry fees collected.

The prize guarantee and its single condition. Every Challenge states a minimum number of entrants before enrollment opens. That minimum is the only condition on the Challenge proceeding. The minimum is measured when the Challenge starts, once entry fees are captured — including any collection retried under the delayed-collection provision — and no later than 3 hours after the scheduled start; an entrant whose entry fee cannot be captured is not counted. If fewer than the minimum number of entrants remain enrolled at that point, the Challenge does not proceed: it is cancelled automatically, any entry fee already captured is refunded in full, remaining authorizations are released, no result is recorded, and no prize is awarded. If enrollment closes with fewer than the minimum number of entrants, the Challenge is cancelled at that point and no entry fee is captured.

If the minimum is met, the Challenge proceeds and the posted prizes become an obligation of the Platform, conditional only on an eligible entrant finishing in each paid place. They are paid in full, exactly as posted, regardless of how many entrants above the minimum enroll, regardless of how much is collected in entry fees, and regardless of whether entry fees cover the prizes. The Platform bears any shortfall. No prize amount is reduced, withheld, or recalculated because enrollment was lower than expected. If fewer eligible entrants finish than there are paid places, the unfilled places are not paid.

Prizes are funded by the Platform, or by a sponsor identified for the Challenge, from a segregated prize reserve funded before enrollment opens in the amount of the posted prizes. The reserve may be a single account used across Challenges, with each Challenge’s prizes recorded separately. The Platform takes no percentage of, and no fee from, any prize.

Entrants who finish outside the cash-winning placements receive points, as described in the Terms of Service. Points are not a prize, have no cash value, and are not allocated by chance.

8. Scoring

Your score in a Challenge is the total number of steps you physically take between the Challenge’s start time and end time, as automatically recorded by your locked step source (Sections 9 and 10) and as synced to the Platform by settlement (Section 11). Standings are ordered by total counted steps, highest first.

  • Only steps automatically recorded by your locked source count. Steps recorded by any other app, device, or source do not count, even if they appear in your health app.
  • Manually entered step data never counts, from any source, under any circumstances. Any attempt to submit manually entered data is treated as an attempt to manipulate Challenge results (Section 17).
  • Steps taken outside the Challenge’s start and end times do not count.

The Platform’s records at settlement are the scoring records for a Challenge, subject only to Sections 18–20.

9. Approved Step Sources

The App reads step data through Apple Health (iOS) or Google Health Connect (Android), and counts steps only from approved sources. The approved sources are currently:

  • On iPhone: Apple Health (covering the iPhone’s built-in step counter and Apple Watch), Garmin, and Oura Ring.
  • On Android: Garmin only. If you use an Android device without a connected Garmin, no approved step source is available to you and you will not be able to accumulate countable steps.

Approved sources are vetted and determined by the Platform in its discretion and may change as devices and platforms change; the App reflects the sources available to your account. A source is approved only if it records steps automatically from a device, provides at least hourly step data, and allows manually entered steps to be excluded.

10. The Source Lock

One step source is set for your account before you enroll, and you may change it in the App’s settings at any time before enrolling. When you enroll in a Challenge, your then-selected source is locked to that entry and cannot be changed for the duration of that Challenge, including its post-Challenge sync window. Only steps recorded by your locked source count toward that Challenge.

It is your responsibility to choose the source that accurately reflects the steps you physically take, and to keep that source recording and syncing throughout the Challenge. If your locked source stops recording or syncing, your counted total may stop advancing, and your most recently synced total will be used.

11. Syncing and the Post-Challenge Sync Window

The App reads your step data when you open it, and it can only read steps that your phone and connected apps have already delivered into Apple Health or Google Health Connect. Keeping your data synced is your responsibility:

  • During a Challenge: keep your wearable and its companion app (for example, Garmin Connect or the Oura app) synced and up to date, and open the App regularly.
  • Android users — refresh Garmin Connect at the end of each day. On Android, Health Connect holds only what Garmin Connect has written into it. Steps that remain on your watch and have not synced to Garmin Connect do not exist as far as the App is concerned. Refresh Garmin Connect at the end of each day, after you have taken your steps for that day. Refreshing earlier in the day does not reliably write that day’s full step count into Health Connect, and steps taken after an early refresh may not be written for that day at all. This is a limitation of how Garmin Connect and Health Connect exchange data and is outside the Platform’s control.
  • Battery optimization: some Android manufacturers apply aggressive battery-saving features that can interfere with syncing between Garmin Connect, Health Connect, and the App. We recommend exempting both Moneystep and Garmin Connect from battery optimization in your device settings.
  • Post-Challenge sync window: after a Challenge ends, sync your apps and open the App within 24 hours of the Challenge end time, so your complete step data is captured before results are finalized.
  • Settlement: results are finalized (“settled”) approximately 24 hours after the Challenge end time. Step data not synced to the Platform by settlement is not included in your final total; your most recently synced total is used. If you never open the App during a Challenge or within its post-Challenge sync window, no step data can be captured and your final total will be zero, regardless of how many steps you physically took.

Background syncing supplements, and does not replace, your sync responsibilities. When you have granted background access, the App attempts to read and sync your steps periodically while closed or in the background. Background syncing is controlled by your device’s operating system and is not guaranteed to run at any particular time or frequency. Your obligations in this Section apply regardless of background syncing.

Sync recency is visible. Each entrant’s leaderboard entry in a live Challenge displays the time that entrant’s steps were last synced. A total that has not synced recently may be materially lower than the steps that entrant has physically taken.

The Platform is not responsible for incomplete, missing, or delayed step data resulting from device settings, device or app failures, manufacturer battery-optimization restrictions, network outages, or failure to sync within the required timeframes.

12. Winner Determination and Settlement

At settlement, entrants are ranked by total counted steps, highest first, and the posted prize schedule is applied to the final standings. Prize placements are awarded to the highest-ranked eligible entrants; any placement that would fall to an ineligible or disqualified entry passes to the next eligible entrant in the standings. Prizes are credited to winners’ in-app wallets at settlement, subject to the integrity, verification, and eligibility provisions of Sections 3 and 17–20.

13. Ties

If two or more entrants tie for a cash-winning placement, they split the combined prize amounts of the placements occupied by the tied entrants. For example, if three entrants tie for 4th place in a Challenge with ten cash-winning places, those three split the combined 4th, 5th, and 6th place prizes, and the entrant with the next-highest step count receives the 7th place prize. If entrants tie for the final cash-winning place, they split that single prize.

Each tied entrant’s share is computed in whole cents, rounded down to the nearest cent. Any cents left over, which are always fewer than the number of tied entrants, are added to the prize of the highest-placed cash-winning entrant who is not part of any tie; if there is no such entrant, the leftover cents remain in the prize reserve. Every entrant occupying a cash-winning placement receives a payment of at least one cent — no cash placement is ever paid zero.

Because ties can affect the amount an individual entrant receives, posted per-placement amounts are shown as expected amounts until the Challenge is settled. The total posted prize for the Challenge does not change; a tie changes only how it is divided.

14. Cancellation

Before a Challenge starts. A Challenge is cancelled and does not proceed if enrollment closes with fewer than its posted minimum number of entrants, or if fewer than the minimum remain enrolled when the Challenge starts after entry fees are captured (Section 7). The Platform may also cancel a Challenge before it starts for any other reason. If a Challenge is cancelled before it starts, remaining authorizations are released, any entry fee already captured is refunded in full, fees paid from wallet balance are restored to the wallet, a Free Entry applied to that Challenge is restored, and enrollees are notified.

Delayed collection. If an entry fee cannot be collected at the scheduled start because the payment processor is temporarily unavailable, collection is retried. The posted start and end times do not change, and steps count from the posted start. An entry whose fee has not been collected within 3 hours after the scheduled start is removed and its authorization released (or refunded, if the charge went through late). If fewer than the minimum number of entrants then remain, the Challenge is cancelled under this Section and every fee already collected is refunded.

After a Challenge starts. The Platform may cancel a Challenge after it has begun only where the Challenge cannot be completed fairly or lawfully, including a technical failure affecting the integrity of scoring, a legal or regulatory requirement, or an event beyond the Platform’s reasonable control. In that case no results are recorded for that Challenge, no prizes are awarded, no result is entered in the career statistics of any entrant still enrolled, and the entry fee of every entrant still enrolled when the Challenge is cancelled is refunded in full, with fees paid from a wallet balance restored to the wallet. An entrant who exited before the cancellation is not refunded, and that exit remains in their career statistics. A Free Entry applied to that Challenge by an entrant still enrolled is restored.

15. Refunds

Entry fees are final: Except as provided in Section 14 (cancellation by the Platform), all entry fees are final and non-refundable in all circumstances — including voluntary exit after the Challenge begins, injury, illness, device malfunction, loss of connectivity, step-sync failure, removal or disqualification for prohibited conduct, and dissatisfaction with results.

If you exit before a Challenge starts, your entry-fee authorization is released (or, if you paid from your wallet, the fee is restored to your wallet, or, if you used a Free Entry, it is restored) and you are not charged.

16. Exiting a Challenge

You may voluntarily exit a Challenge at any time, before or after it starts. For the period while entry fees are being captured — up to 3 hours after the scheduled start if the payment processor is temporarily unavailable — exits are unavailable; you may exit again once the Challenge has started.

  • Before the Challenge starts: your authorization is released (or your wallet-paid fee is restored, or your Free Entry is restored) and you are not charged. You are free to enroll in another Challenge immediately.
  • After the Challenge starts: your entry fee is not refunded, and a Free Entry applied to that Challenge is not restored. You are removed from the Challenge and its leaderboard, you receive no prize, and you are free to enroll in another Challenge immediately.

Exits are recorded in your career statistics; exiting after a Challenge has started counts as a last-place finish for statistical purposes. Steps taken during an exited Challenge are not credited toward your career step totals or any global leaderboard.

17. Prohibited Conduct and Disqualification

The following conduct is prohibited in connection with any Challenge. The full prohibited-conduct provisions of the Terms of Service (§15) also apply. Prohibited conduct includes, without limitation:

  • Manually entering, editing, importing, or otherwise inputting step or health data by hand rather than physically taking the steps.
  • Using any device, application, or method to artificially generate or inflate step counts, or any other manipulation of step or health data.
  • Creating or using multiple accounts, participating under a false identity, or using or sharing another person’s account.
  • Entering a paid or cash-prize Challenge that Section 5 does not permit you to enter.
  • Generating or attempting to generate referral credit through fraud or abuse, including self-referrals, referrals of duplicate or fabricated accounts, or any coordinated scheme to accumulate referrals.
  • Colluding, coordinating, or agreeing with other entrants to manipulate outcomes or share winnings.
  • Exploiting bugs, vulnerabilities, or malfunctions in the App, or using bots, scripts, or other automation to interact with it.
  • Using a VPN, proxy, location-spoofing tool, or any other method to disguise or misrepresent your location.
  • Participating while physically located outside an Eligible State, or while otherwise ineligible under Section 3.
  • Submitting payment with a method you do not own or are not authorized to use.

Where the Platform determines that an entrant has engaged in prohibited conduct, it may disqualify the entry, remove the entrant from the Challenge without refund, withhold or reclaim any associated prize, forfeit associated winnings and wallet balance in accordance with the Terms of Service, and suspend or permanently ban the account. A prize position vacated by a disqualified entry passes to the next eligible entrant in the standings. Determinations are made through the process described in Sections 18 and 19.

18. Integrity Reviews and Verification

The Platform monitors Challenge activity for signs of manipulation, irregularity, or conduct inconsistent with these Rules.

The Platform may at any time require you to verify your identity, your activity, or your step data — including where activity associated with your account is identified as suspicious, irregular, or anomalous. If verification is requested:

  • You must respond and provide the requested information within seven (7) days of the request. We will send at least two notices during that period.
  • While a review is ongoing, any prize, wallet balance, or withdrawal associated with the Challenge or activity under review is placed on hold. A hold is not a forfeiture: held amounts are released if the review resolves in your favor. Funds in your account that are not associated with the activity under review are not held.
  • While a review is ongoing, the Platform may also hold your rank tier at its current level (a “rank lock”). A rank lock is lifted or confirmed as part of the written determination.
  • At the conclusion of a review the Platform will provide a written determination stating the basis for its decision. Forfeiture occurs only where the Platform determines that a violation occurred.
  • If you fail to respond within the seven-day period, or provide false or materially incomplete information, the Platform may make a determination on the information available to it, and the associated entry may be disqualified and the associated amounts forfeited, and your account suspended or banned — subject to your appeal right in Section 19.

The Platform determines in its discretion what constitutes an adequate response, and is not obligated to release held amounts while a review is ongoing.

Repeated suspicious activity. Where activity associated with your account is repeatedly identified as suspicious, the Platform may suspend or permanently terminate your account, whether or not any individual instance was separately confirmed as a violation and whether or not you were notified of any prior instance. Any wallet balance and pending winnings are forfeited only where the Platform determines that a violation occurred, subject to the appeal process; otherwise they are paid out to you. The methods, criteria, and thresholds the Platform uses to identify suspicious activity are confidential and are not disclosed.

19. Appeals

You may appeal a disqualification, forfeiture, or other adverse integrity determination one time. To appeal, email hello@moneystep.app within seven (7) days of the notice of the determination, identifying the Challenge and stating the grounds for your appeal and any supporting information.

An appeal is reviewed by a person other than the person who made the original determination, and the Platform will respond within ten (10) business days. Amounts on hold remain on hold during the appeal. The appeal decision is final. A determination that is not appealed within the seven-day window becomes final. You must complete this appeal process before commencing arbitration under Section 22 of the Terms of Service in respect of that determination.

20. Disputing Your Own Result

Separately from integrity appeals, if you believe your own final step count or placement in a settled Challenge is incorrect — for example, steps you physically took were not counted — you must notify the Platform at hello@moneystep.app within seven (7) days after that Challenge is settled, identifying the Challenge and describing the claimed error. After that window, your final result is deemed accepted and final as to you. Whether and how to act on any notice is within the Platform’s discretion.

21. Prize Payment and Taxes

Prizes are credited to your in-app wallet at settlement and are paid, in U.S. dollars, through a licensed third-party payment processor. You may request a withdrawal from the Wallet & Points section of the App’s Dashboard. Your location is verified at each withdrawal request, and a withdrawal is blocked if the check places you outside an Eligible State or detects VPN use or location spoofing. Your age and identity verification must be complete before your first withdrawal is processed; that verification requires your consent to the biometric terms in the Privacy Policy. The email address on your account must also be verified before you can request a withdrawal. Withdrawal requests are submitted to the processor within ten (10) business days after the request clears those checks; the time for funds to reach you after that depends on the processor and your bank. A withdrawal associated with activity under review (Section 18) is held until the review is complete and may take longer.

You are solely responsible for the accuracy of your withdrawal information; the Platform is not responsible for payments misdirected due to information you provided. Wallet balances may alternatively be applied to future entry fees. If your account has no sign-in, Challenge entry, or withdrawal for twelve (12) consecutive months, any wallet balance is paid out to you automatically after at least thirty (30) days’ notice, as described in the Terms of Service.

You are solely responsible for all taxes on prizes. If your cumulative gross winnings in a calendar year equal or exceed $2,000, you will be required to provide a valid Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number before further payouts are processed, and the Platform will issue a Form 1099 as required by law. Failure to provide required tax information may result in a hold on winnings until it is received.

22. General Conditions

  • These Rules incorporate, and are subject to, the Moneystep Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, including the dispute-resolution, arbitration, and class-action-waiver provisions of the Terms of Service (§22), the limitation of liability (§21), and the health, safety, and assumption-of-risk provisions (§13).
  • The Platform may amend these Rules from time to time. Amendments apply prospectively: the version of these Rules and the Challenge-specific details posted at the time of your enrollment govern that Challenge for you.
  • Your username, your counted step total, the time your steps were last synced, and your placement are visible to every other entrant in any Challenge you join, live during the Challenge and in challenge history after it ends. Your username, global leaderboard standings, and any leaderboard badges you hold are visible more broadly as described in the Privacy Policy.
  • Apple Inc. and Google LLC are not sponsors of, and are not involved in, any Challenge in any manner.
  • If any provision of these Rules is held unenforceable, it is to be modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed, without affecting the remaining provisions.
  • These Rules are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
